He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at the Universities of St. Andrews and Glasgow, he also won a Snell Exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford. Lang went to London in 1875 and lived there for most of his life, spending his winters in St. Andrews in later years. He married Leonore Blanche Alleyne on April 17, 1875.
